Back at the end of October, we held our only fundraiser so far, and it was a popular one. Who doesn't like getting candy around Halloween? (Especially when friendly members of Lambda Sigma deliver it right to your dorm room!) We set up a table outside the Danforth University Center on Friday, October 22nd, and on the South Forty the next day, and since it was Parents Weekend, we just tried to start up a conversation with anyone who happened to walk by.
The money we raised all went directly to our chosen project this semester, with the option of continuing it in the spring. We are teaching a class on cultural diversity twice each week at the Youth Learning Center in the Central West End area of St. Louis; so far we're enjoying it, and most importantly, so are the kids!
Themes we've taught about include Italian culture and the Renaissance, cultures of West Africa, China, and this week we are teaching about Mardi Gras and New Orleans! The classes typically include a section on the language, art or another creative idea, geography, and food. The creative aspect can be anything from arts and crafts, to salsa dancing, to making their own representative characters (in relation to the Chinese alphabet), and so on. Once the kids have completed the initial task, they then get to share what they created with their classmates. Sometimes even members of Lambda Sigma join in on the creative activity in addition to just being the teachers!
